Bedwetting Enuresis

For many parents, it is a source of frustration. For children, it can be a devastatingly humiliating experience – something far worse than any monsters hiding under their beds or in their closets. I am talking about Nocturnal Enuresis, or bed wetting. Some children continue to suffer from this mattress pads, waterproof mattress coverscondition when they should be enjoying sleepovers and slumber parties. Yet, for the child who suffers from Involuntary Bed wetting, the thought of sleeping over someone’s house is riddled with fear that his or her “secret” will be exposed.

The cause of Nocturnal Enuresis isn’t exactly known, however studies have shown that the number of children who suffer with this condition is between 5-7 million. Nocturnal refers to nighttime, so Nocturnal Enuresis is bed wetting that occurs during the night. It is also classified as children who involuntarily wet the bed when they are well passed the years of potty training. The occurrence of Nocturnal Enuresis is more prevalent in boys than in girls.

Conditions that Point to the Existence of Nocturnal Enuresis

If your child wets the bed one time that doesn’t necessarily indicate Nocturnal Enuresis. Here are some factors that doctors look at when diagnosing Nocturnal Enuresis.

First, the doctor will need to determine if the Nocturnal Enuresis or involuntary bed wetting is frequent and repetitive. If a child is having episodes of at least 2 times a week, for at least three weeks, then that points to Nocturnal Enuresis.

Doctors will also take down the medical history of the child. In diagnosing Nocturnal Enuresis, the process is conducted on the basis of “ruling out” other medical conditions to determine what may be the underlying cause. The medical history part of the diagnosis will be concerned with answers to questions regarding medications the child may be taking, urinary tract infections, bladder and spinal cord abnormalities, Diabetes, and certain Seizure related disorders. Another factor that the doctor will look at is if there is a family history of Nocturnal Enuresis.

Nocturnal Enuresis: Causes

These questions help determine the existence of Nocturnal Enuresis. Though the cause is more like a puzzle than a simple laboratory test, there are some definite signs that contribute to the cause of Nocturnal Enuresis. For example, childhood stress 1000 such as a death, divorce, or significant change can trigger Nocturnal Enuresis. Delayed or slowed growth and development may also cause Nocturnal Enuresis. If the bladder is too small, that will also contribute. Some children are just heavy sleepers and won’t wake up. While some medications may cause a child to wet the bed, this however does not constitute Nocturnal Enuresis. Once the course of prescribed medications is finished, the bed wetting problem stops.

What can be done about Nocturnal Enuresis?

Over the centuries the number one step that parents took to prevent Nocturnal Enuresis was to punish the child. This has led to a great misconception over what Nocturnal Enuresis is and has left society with the view that it was “bad behavior” on the child’s part. Parental education is absolutely necessary to the treatment of this condition and imperative to the child’s emotional well-being. The child is not purposely wetting the bed to anger the parents, and parents need to be informed of positive and helpful steps they can take to encourage their children with gentle guidance and kindness.

If the Nocturnal Enuresis is the result of a medical condition, then treatment may be started according to the remedy appropriate for the condition.
For sound sleepers, the use of a bed wetting alarm may be the solution. The alarm will go off, and the child is essentially being “trained” to wake up and use the restroom. Your doctor will instruct you on the proper use of the bedwetting alarm. If the condition is caused by slow growth usually no specific treatment is necessary, once the child grows, the Nocturnal Enuresis should stop.

No matter what you think may be the cause of Nocturnal Enuresis; you should take your child to the family doctor to have the proper diagnosis and treatment.

The sheer amount of options which are available to parents like you means that you should never feel like you are clutching at straws looking for a solution.

A child that wets the bed can be particularly low in morale, especially if the child in question is wetting the bed longer than his or her peers. Motivating the child with incentives when they do not wet the bed can help them to become more aware of their toilet habits and can help them to become more responsible by going to the toilet before bedtime and removing their bedding themselves when they do not have a dry night. Really though, this exercise should only be implemented when the child is older than the age of seven and not going through what is known as common bedwetting.

The alarm acts by a sensor which detects when the child is wetting the bed. This can then encourage them to get up and conclude their urinating in the bathroom, reducing the amount of spill on the bed. This combined with an incentive chart can do wonders.

Important Information On Eradicating Bed Wetting Problems

If you need to stop your child from bed wetting, you are probably embarrassed and frustrated from the behavior, as well as tired of always having to clean up after your child. It is important that you are patient and do not show your frustration to your child. This is extremely important due to the fact that your child is also frustrated and embarrassed by their bed wetting habits, and are as eager to stop it as you are.
The first step you need to take to Stop Bed Wetting is change your mentality and lifestyle to deal with the problem. Using bed wetting alarms to inform you when you need to make certain your child is awakened is a good start. By breaking the deep sleep cycles, you can form the habits your child needs to wake themselves up and go to the bathroom without your assistance. In addition to this, you need to become extremely patient. If you yell at your child, they will become stressed and nervous, which will only make the problem worse.
As your child starts to develop new sleeping habits, the next step to bed wetting is to practice retention exercises. As a child’s bladder develops, they need to practice holding in their urine so they can last the entire night without having to go to the bathroom. This will result in the correct of bed wetting problems. However, this should be done very gradually, as children can be stressed by these exercises. Retention exercises should not be worked on during holidays and other high excitement times, as this is a recipe for failure.
Finally, before you take any steps to stop bed wetting, you need to ensure that your child is healthy. Bed wetting over the age of five is not considered normal. Because of this, you should consult with a doctor first to make certain that there are no underlying health problems. Liver and kidney problems, as well as diseases like Lupus, can cause bed wetting in children, teenagers and adults. Only your doctor can properly diagnose whether or not the bed wetting is something other than an underdeveloped bladder or deep sleep cycles.
If your child needs to bedwetting, you should use positive reinforcement rather than punishment. With a child’s self-esteem already suffering from their bed wetting tendencies, using positive reinforcement over punishment can help improve their esteem as well as make the behavior changes necessary easier for them to handle.

Bed wetting can be a terrible problem for a growing boy (or girl, of course, though the disorder is comparatively uncommon among them). As he grows up, there are more and more opportunities and requirements for him to spend nights away from home, and the child with this problem has to find excuses all the time. Even within the home, the teasing and humiliation can be merciless.

Children who have an increase in accidental wetting after treatment are considered to have relapsed. A relapse is defined as more than 2 wet nights in 2 weeks. The most likely time for a child to relapse is within the first 6 months after treatment. If a child relapses after stopping a successful therapy, that same therapy usually is repeated.

Rewards should be given for the child’s staying dry by waking in the night and going to the toilet. Staying dry by holding the urine till morning is a less satisfactory achievement, because these children have not overcome the primary problem.

Retention Control Training: The child is asked to control urinating during the day by postponing it, first by a few minutes and then by gradually increased amounts of time. This exercise can extend the capacity of the bladder and strengthen the muscle that holds back urination. Parents should always check with a doctor before asking their child to practice retention control.

No drinks before bedtime. Especially no beer, (for the people who do still Wet the bed) Try not to let them get up for a drink and make sure they go to the crapper before bed. If all else fails. Get plastic bedspread and sheets.
Avoid juices of fruits like apple, orange, grapes and pineapple. Avoid sweets, fruits, chocolates, meat and artificial additives. Foods like corn, soy, wheat, dairy products, tomatoes and eggs cause allergy. It is better to avoid such allergy causing foods. Avoid all processed and prepackaged foods.

Another important thing to remember is that no child wets the bed on purpose. And if he does then it does not mean that he/she is lazy or a slob. It’s something they can’t help doing. Kids who wet the bed cannot feel that their bladders are full and don’t wake up to pee in the toilet. Sometimes a kids who wet the bed have a realistic dream that he or she is in the bathroom peeing -but they realize later that he or she  is all wet.

Reduce any stress that might be causing problem to your child. Though some stress, such as change in life situations, is inescapable, you can reduce the stress caused by the problem by not making a child feel overly embarrassed or guilty. It may be hard, but try to be realistic about the situation and don’t punish your child for bedwetting–it’s unlikely that it is within her/his control.

Bed Wetting Treatment

When I was a resident in training, researchers were actively trying to find a cause and cure for bedwetting. They thought that bedwetting was caused by having a small bladder and they thought that stretching the bladder would cure bedwetting. So they fed children diuretics that bedwetting treatment, bed wetting treatmentscaused them to produce copious amounts of urine and asked them to sit in chairs and hold the urine. Needless to say the treatment didn’t work, the children were miserable and today, more than 40 years later, a study from Denmark shows that bed wetting is not caused by having a small bladder. This confirms several studies showing that wetting the bed is usually caused by lack of antidiuretic hormone that is produced by the brain at night to shut down the kidneys and that this condition in young children can often be cured by taking a nasal spray or pill, called desmopressin, that shuts down the kidneys at night.

Desmopressin can also treat many men who urinate frequently at night, and do not have a prostate infection or cancer. Lack of antidiuretic hormone is genetic because fathers and mothers have children who also are bed wetters.

Bedwetting is common up to the age of eight, with most bed wetters growing up to become normal healthy adults. All children who wet the bed after age five should be evaluated by their pediatricians. They should have their urines checked for infection and perhaps a kidney x-ray to see if there is any abnormality in their urinary system. Most of the time, no cause is found. Bed wetters do not have more emotional or behavioral problems.
During the day, your kidneys are supposed to produce urine, but at night, your brain should produce an antidiuretic hormone called ADH, to shut down your kidneys. The brains of many bed wetters don’t produce enough antidiuretic hormone at night, which causes their bladders to fill. When it happens to adults, they usually wake up and go to the bathroom, but bed wetters sleep through the night and wet the bed. For the last five years, doctors have treated bedwetting with a special nasal spray containing an antidiuretic hormone called desmopressin, but many children continue to wet their beds. Several studies show that taking a new 400 microgram desmopressin pill at bedtime and restricting fluids helps reduce bedwetting by almost 50 percent. Check with your doctor.

Many parents worry when their boy continues bed wetting beyond the age when many other children are dry at night, but in many cases there is no need to be alarmed. Many children start becoming dry at about 3 years, but about 10% are still bed wetting at 5 years, with it being twice as common with boys. If a boy is still bed wetting at 6 years then a doctor should be consulted to ensure there is not a physical problem.

bed wetting, bed wetting boysThere are a number of possible reasons why a boy is bed wetting. A small child has to learn to recognise the need to use the bathroom. A young baby has no control over their bladder, but as they develop and mature, the brain begins to recognise and control the need to empty the bladder. If the bladder is small or weak, bed wetting may occur, but as the child grows older, training will normally overcome this. Some children are heavy sleepers and are unaware that they need to urinate.

Some parents are concerned that the problem may be due to anxiety. This is not normally the case, although many, normally dry children will wet the bed at times of stress such as starting school or parents divorcing.. This is a normal reaction and should only cause concern if it continues. No parent should get angry about bed wetting as this could cause anxiety.
It is generally believed that bed wetting may be genetic. If one parent was a bed wetter as a child, there is an increased risk that their child will also bed wet. If both parents were sufferers, the risk increases greatly.

If you have any concerns at all you should consult your doctor to find out whether treatment is necessary. You should always seek help if a child who has been dry suddenly lapses.

Bed wetting often runs in families Most kids who wet the bed have a relative that did it, too. If both parents wet the bed when they were young, it’s very likely that their child will as well. Generally, bed-wetting before age 6 or 7 isn’t cause for concern. At this age, nighttime bladder control simply may not be established.

A bed wetting alarm has a moisture sensor that attaches to your child’s pajamas. When it senses wetness a small alarm will sound alerting the child (and parents) that he or she has wet. If the child hasn’t completely emptied their bladder, this may help train them to use the toilet during the night. When you first start using the alarm, someone will need to be there when the child wets to walk him to the bathroom and empty his or her bladder while the alarm is still going off.

Bedwetting alarms are now available at leading pharmacies in India too, and over a period of around 3 months they are very useful in decreasing/ stopping bed wetting altogether. For quicker relief these may be combined with DDAVP. Imipramine tablets are a cheaper treatment option however these have significant side-effects like nervousness, tiredness and intestinal problems. Remember for most kids bed wetting is nothing more than an inconvenience or at worse a social problem.

A tea infusion concocted from equal parts of St. John’s Wort, Lemon Balm and Cornsilk serves as an instant home remedy for bed wetting in children. Meanwhile, medicinal extracts of the herb Equisetum is popularly used in traditional Chinese medicine as homeopathic treatment for bed wetting. Equisetum (6cH) is purported to naturally ease the bladders, restore healthy functioning and relieve nocturnal enuresis within a span of few weeks while relieving anxious behaviors in children on the sidelines.

Since some bed wetting is caused by undiagnosed medical conditions such as diabetes or allergies, it makes sense to take your child to a doctor to be checked out. If there is a doctor in your area who is known for treating children with Enuresis, so much the better. In either case, ruling out medical problems can be a big relief. If a medical problem is causing your child to wet the bed, coping with the problem will also generally resolve the Enuresis.

Bedwetting or enuresis is one of the more common behavioral problems with small children. Bedwetting occurs when a child, instead of waking up and going to the toilet, or just ‘holding it’; releases urine when the bladder gets full during sleep. There are a lot of reasons for it – deep sleep, a small bladder capacity, an increased production of urine during night and constipation. Sometimes, even sensitivity towards certain foods can contribute towards enuresis. Studies indicate that children who suffer from enuresis fail to register the connection between the urge to urinate and the need to wake up and go the bathroom. It is as if their brain was differently ‘wired’ and this basic behavior pattern is absent from their mental make-up.

A number of treatment options are available – medication, bed pads and bedwetting alarms. While medication always has its inherent risks, a bed pad is plain uncomfortable. Its plastic surface does not tend towards a relaxed sleep and neither does it sound the alarm when the child expels only a small amount of urine.

The safest bet for any parent of a child suffering from enuresis is a bedwetting alarm. This kind of an alarm has a sensory disc, which can be attached to the child’s underwear, which in turn is connected to a device, which sounds an alarm immediately when the disc registers moisture. The theory is that if you are successful in waking up the child as soon as he feels the urge to urinate, you can train him to go to the bathroom immediately. The child’s brain registers the connection between these two acts and learns this behavior. Eventually the child will learn to get up without the need for an alarm and bedwetting would stop.

Because they instigate a behavioral change in the child, the use of bedwetting alarms is highly recommended. In fact, studies show that these devices have success rate of 60% to 80%. While medication is a stopgap arrangement, the alarms teach the child a lifelong habit. These devices usually have a standard mode of operation. The alarm is connected by cable to a small sensor. This sensor is attached to the outside of the child’s underwear. The lightweight alarm unit is anchored usually to the shoulder or lapel of the child’s pajamas. The sensor should be placed where the first drop of urine would be expected. Moisture triggers the alarm (usually auditory), forcing the child to wake.

Initially, some difficulties might be experienced while using the alarm. The child might sleep through the jarring alarm, pull it off during sleep or refuse to use it. In these cases, parents have to proceed with extreme patience. They would have to help the child to wake up during the night and eventually he will learn to respond to the alarm. A restless sleeper might dislodge the sensor. Thus, it is necessary to choose a model that adheres firmly to underwear, while at the same time is not uncomfortable. In the case of a child’s refusal to its usage, you should attempt to demonstrate its operation. Listen to his objections and persuade him by adequately addressing his concerns. However, in no situation should a bed wetting alarm be forced upon the child.
